It is the minhag during the month of Adar to perform the mitzvah of Zecher L’mahasit Hashekel to commemorate the annual half-shekel contribution that each Jew would give to fund the expenses of the Bet Ha’mikdash.
The mitzvah is preferably done using 3 half-dollar coins of silver content. Each coin should have a value of nine grams of silver, which this year 2017 amounts to approximately $5.00 per coin or $15.00 per person. The minhag is for each person in the family to fulfill this special mitzvah.
